Management of Chronic Pain

What is pain management?

The word “pain” is a word that we are all familiar with. There isn’t a person on this Earth who can honestly say that he has never felt pain. There is physical, mental and emotional pain. While physical pain is easier to manage, mental and emotional pain is somewhat more difficult to manage. In this article, we will be focusing on the management of physical pain which is commonly referred to pain management.  Physical pain originates from medical conditions, injuries to bodily tissues and infections. Being able to control that pain is what is referred to pain management.

What are some characteristics of pain?

Before we continue with pain management, let’s take a look at some common characteristics of pain.

Pain is influenced by our awareness and mood.   Pain is in most cases an unpleasant experience.
Pain is based on a person’s perception of pain.   Everyone feels and interprets pain differently.

How does pain affect our body?

In order to understand how pain affects our body, you need to understand the types of pain that our body experience. Our body experiences two types of pain: acute and chronic.

Acute pain is normal. We feel it every day. It is usually there for a short reason and is normally the result on an injury. Chronic pain on the other hand is persistent and lasts for months or even years. Chronic pain is normally the result on an illness.  So how does your body reacts when it is in pain?

There is an increase in your heart rate and blood pressure.
There is an increase in the levels of stress hormones that your body produces.
  You may experience gastrointestinal problems.
You may experience musculoskeletal problems such as fatigue.

You can refer to this article, for more information on pain management.

How can pain be easily treated?

Many people suffering from pain will visit the GP and will be treated but did you know that help is available from doctors online too? While, it is recommended that patients are treated by their GP, it is possible to get certain medications online for short term treatment. There are three main medications which can be purchased online which can help to relieve the pain that you are feeling. These are:

Let’s take a look at Co-codamol which is a combination of codeine and paracetamol. If you are suffering from pain, then co-codamol is the treatment of choice. It is available as capsules and tablets and in a variety of strengths. Like all medications, Co-codamol is not suitable for everyone and it does have some side effects such as constipation.

Another simple treatment of pain is Dihydrocodeine. Just like Co-codamol, Dihydrocodeine can be prescribed for severe pain. Dihydrocodeine works by mimicking the actions of the naturally occurring pain-reducing chemicals that our body produces known as endorphins. It does not remove the cause of the pain but it does lessen the pain. If you are suffering from chronic pain caused by illnesses such as cancer, then this is the medication that you need to get.

The third treatment option available for pain is diclofenac. Diclofenac is prescribed for inflammatory pain. Most of the times when your body is suffering from an infection, the infection is accompanied by inflammation. This inflammation causes pain. If you are suffering from this time of pain, diclofenac is the medication for you. For example, if you are suffering from inflammation caused by arthritis, then diclofenac is the right medication for you. Diclofenac is also available in a powder form which can also be used to treat mild migraine headaches.

What are other pain management options?

While medication is one of the most effective ways of getting your pain under control, there are a few other options. The first step to pain management is visiting your doctor so that he can determine the cause of your pain so that he can also determine the best pain management approach.

Therapy is another pain management option which focuses both on the body and the mind. Physical therapy can be quite effective for dealing with pain as it builds your tolerance and reduces your pain in the process. One can also get cognitive-behavioral therapy which will help them to have a better understanding of what pain is and how to deal with it. Some other techniques include: mediation, relaxation techniques, massages and heat and cold therapy.

In conclusion, when pain becomes a problem in your life, you should make sure that you seek treatment immediately. You should deal with your pain before it becomes an issue and affects your daily functioning. Remember that pain is unpleasant and if it is not under control, it will affect your life and your functioning.
