ParentsAs parents, we all want our children to be happy and to achieve the goals in life that reflect their true potential. Unfortunately for many however, we have to witness the negative effects that the symptoms of difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD can have on our children. We see them struggling at school and performing at a level that is clearly below their actual ability. We share their daily frustrations and feelings of failure and this inevitably becomes a heavy emotional burden.
At Dyslexia Awareness we understand your frustrations and fears because we have experienced them for ourselves. We also understand that for many children, the underlying cause and symptoms of a learning difficulty can be tackled through proper identification and appropriate support. That is not to say we believe in a ‘cure’ as this would suggest that these frequently intelligent and talented children are somehow abnormal. Clearly they are not; their major difficulty is often an inability to express their underlying talent through conventional channels such as reading, writing or sporting ability. Our aim is to better equip these children to meet the challenges that lie ahead of them. To recognise their strengths and help them overcome their personal barriers. Our approach to learning difficulties draws on both traditional and contemporary theory and practice. The back to basics approach of synthetic phonics can be immensely successful for struggling readers whether they be dyslexic or not. The more modern sensory/motor programmes (that have actually been around for forty plus years) target the underlying problem and as such, they can help to start to address a wide variety of issues. Although both these types of approach are widely available, we believe that we are one of the few who can offer either or a combination of both to more accurately reflect a child’s particular needs.
There are of course a number of programmes and avenues available with regard to additional support. In all cases, the single most important factor for success is a commitment to the programme (not the amount of money spent). All any programme can (or should)promise is to steer you towards your goal, but in all cases it requires the ongoing effort of you and your child to ensure that these goals are met. When taking into account aspects such as cost, ease of use, experience and potential outcome, we believe we offer outstanding value.
