Profile

The Sheffield Dyslexia Awareness Training Consultancy was formed by Phil Simpson in 2006. It followed a successful period in which he was contracted to NHS Ireland in order to provide specialist advice for the impending UK, Irish and European launch of the highly acclaimed Learning Breakthrough Programme. During his time with NHS Ireland, Phil developed staff training protocols, on-line screening tests, school information packs, established contact with numerous professional organisations and generally gave advice on all aspects of Special Educational Needs.

Prior to this, Phil worked for Wynford Dore at a Dore Achievement Centre (DDAT). During this time he assessed and managed the treatment of literally hundreds of children and adults who were affected by the symptoms of a learning difficulty. He was also involved in clinical supervision, staff training and educational link work. It was this experience that reinforced the potential value of supplementing academic efforts with a structured sensory integration programme.

Since the school year ’06-‘07, more than 1,000 school staff of all grades have attended Dyslexia/Dyspraxia seminars organised and delivered by Dyslexia Awareness. We anticipate that this number will double next year as additional training sessions for Dyslexia Screening and Synthetic Phonics amongst others are launched. If you are a teacher, parent or allied professional with an interest in learning difficulties, please check out our training opportunities or contact us. We are always more than happy to offer whatever advice and support we have available.

Learn2 was established 2008 in response to the many requests we have received to provide a quality assessment and support service. At the end of our training sessions school staff would frequently ask if it was possible to point the parents of some of their children in our direction. They had identified some youngsters who they believed may benefit from additional structured support, either as an extension to that already given in school or in some cases as the only form of additional support (although school staff may have the will to offer appropriate support to all children, resources often dictate that however unpalatable, a line has to be drawn somewhere).

We have therefore extended our training service so that we are also able to offer assessment & support to those that would benefit from it. We are also committed to making this as accessible as possible. Some providers charge in excess of £40 per hour, our service is available at a much more reasonable £20 per session. With some providers you are largely sat in front of a computer in a self-education type situation. Our programme is based around 1 to 1 support. Certainly computers may play a part, but this will generally be to reinforce that which you have just been learning.

The MagiKats programme offer an extension of our current support service. These are high quality curriculum linked English & maths tuition programmes and as such are ideal for chldren of all ages and ability. Now, not only can help improve the literacy skills of the dyslexic child but we can also help fill in many of the foundational skills that they may have missed out during early school days. Equally, these programmes are very appropriate for any child who for whatever reason, simply needs more time and opportunity in order to consolidate their skills and improve their confidence. Therefore, whether your child is dyslexic, borderline dyslexic or simply lacking in confidence, these programmes are ideal.

Our training provision is frequently rated as ‘excellent’; we believe that our assessment and support service will also become as highly regarded.
