SENS-ABILITYSens-Ability Programme Launch
Does your child
- Have poor manual dexterity e.g. inability to hold a pen or cutlery correctly?
- Avoid sport & other activities which require the ability to co-ordinate movement?
- Have a poor sense of balance and/or often appear clumsy?
- Find it difficult to remember information or present it logically?
- Miss/insert words or often re-read the same word or line when reading?
- Have a short attention span?
Did you know that learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyspraxia (developmental co-ordination disorders) and AD(H)D frequently co-exist within the same individual?
Did you know that the appropriate development of sensory/motor skills underpins aspects of both physical and academic ability?
The Sens-Ability Programme The underlying fundamentals of the Sens-Ability approach have been used in clinics, schools and hospitals in the USA with great success for the past three decades. We are delighted to finally make this fun to use balance and sensory processing tool available to all (young & old) in the South Yorkshire area.
Sens-Ability is an exercise (movement based) programme that provides a gentle work-out for the brain. Just as some physical activity is designed to develop muscle through repetition and increased difficulty, Sens-Ability uses those same principles to encourage the development and better organisation of the neural network. This concept is called neuro-plasticity and is also known to professionals as physical intelligence or educational kinesiology.
The appropriate development and organisation of the neural network is essential because it underpins the ability to learn and consolidate many of the skills that the majority take for granted. Skills such as reading, writing, memory recall, physical coordination and manual dexterity should all become as automatic as riding a bike once learnt (require little conscious effort). Sens-Ability provides the focussed, sequential and sensory integrative tasks necessary to develop the neural network and subsequently helps the individual to unlock their underlying potential.
Sens-Ability can be used successfully as a stand-alone programme, particularly by those who have difficulties that are movement based (e.g. poor balance, co-ordination and motor skills etc). It is however equally beneficial when used in tandem with academic approaches, helping the individual to maximise their efforts and the value of the support undertaken. Although those who are experiencing physical or academic difficulties may have most to gain, by its very nature (fine-tuning physical and cognitive performance); this programme is suitable for anyone who simply wants to ensure that they are performing to the best of their ability.
This young man (age 6) thinks he is simply having some fun throwing and catching a bean bag. Little does he know that he is also developing his gross & fine motor skills, co-ordination, eye-tracking ability, integration of the two hemispheres of his brain etc. He is in fact developing a whole host of skills which are essential to both physical and academic performance (and not a tantrum in site).
The Sens-Ability programme is structured in such a way as to be constantly testing yet always attainable.
The programme is accessed during weekly hour long session in the Sheffield Dyslexia Centre. This brings the additional benefit of caring and professional supervision throughout. The centre programme is supplemented by an easy to follow home based programme which requires just 10-15 minutes of gentle exercise once or twice a day. All of this is available from only £18 per week! To find out more about the Sens-Ability programme or to arrange an initial free consultation Simply call or email and arrange a free and informal chat (we are 5 mins from Meadowhall)
